Banksy’s “Stained Window” was created for MOCA’s Art in the Street in 2011 which was the first major US museum exhibition of street art and graffiti. In a collaborative effort, Banksy enlisted the help of students from City of Angels School in Los Angeles. Panels were erected at the school and the students were encouraged to tag them with whatever markings, designs and messages they saw fit. The resulting image was then used as source material for the stain on the windows in the final piece. The iconoclastic kneeling figure in front draws extra light to the conversion of museum to a church as well as the elevation of graffiti to high art.
